I didn't find any of my ancestor's gravestones in the collection but if you have ancestors who died in New England (a few hundred more from the Carolinas and in the maritimes in Canada and a smaller number for Texas and Virginia from various time periods) in seventeenth and eighteenth centuries you might be suprised at what you find. The collection has over 9,000 photos and many of the gravestones photographed no longer exist due to weather, vandalism and neglect.

Farber Gravestone Collection

In addition to valuable genealogical information, the collection vividly highlights the beautiful handcarving done on sandstone and other materials. Between 1786-1796 the company purchased millions of acres of land from the US Government. They hired and dispatched surveyors to lay out lots that typically were each 100 acres in size. Many prominent names appears in these land records, including Return Jonathan Meigs, Benjamin Tupper, Rufus Putnam and many others who had important roles in Ohio's settlement and government.

The Ohio Company's purchases led to the creation of Marietta in 1788, the first permanent settlement in Ohio. It is in this area around Marietta along the Muskingum River and Duck Creek that several descendents of Ensign Benjamin Cooley purchased land. These descendents names are listed in an index of the original books of the Ohio Company:

Jabez Cooley Lot 81 100 acres Duck Creek Allotment

Asahel Cooley Lot 2 100 acres Allotment not visible or not listed

Reuben Cooley Lot 60 100 acres Muskingum Allotment

W. Simeon Cooley Lot 59 100 acres Muskingum Allotment

Thanks to a wonderful digitizing effort by the Marietta College Library, many of the original Ohio Company of Associates land records are available on the internet. Marietta College in Marietta College should be commended for making such historical documents available to everyone. In the fall of 1922, Henry, who was not quite 17 drove alone from Dallas, Texas to Los Angeles, California and kept a short notebook detailing miles travelled and where he stayed along the way. He drove the first car he owned, a 1915 Ford Model T. He would complain later that he had to repair the tires many times on that trip.

Later in life Henry owned, restored and showed two Ford Model T's. The one pictured here is a 1911 Ford Model T that he purchased in 1949.

Over the course of his life, he owned twenty-nine cars and trucks, including five Ford Model T's, several Ford, Dodge and Chevrolet trucks, two Jeeps, a couple of Mercury's, and several brands that have vanished from the car scene: a 1907 Tourist 2 Cylinder (probably still being pampered in someone's garage in L.A.!), a 1926 Hudson Essex Super Six Coach, a 1928 Oakland 6 Cylinder All American and a 1933 Studebaker Rockne 10 6 Cylinder four door.

Henry became a four wheel drive fan when he bought his first Jeep in 1953. Over the years he enjoyed driving in the mountains and hills in Nevada, Arizona, California and Utah. One winter he had the opportunity to pull his son's AMC Ambassador with posi-trac traction out of the snow where it had become hopelessly stuck. He wrote a poem to capture the moment:

BOGGED DOWN

Jerry said have no fear

Because positive traction is here

We all stood there with an icy chill

When one wheel spun and the other stood still

Snow was deep we all could see

They inquired about accomodations and how much they would be

'long came Grand Pa a good fellow it has been said

What else can you say when snow is over your head?

Grand Pa was glad to pull you out

That's what 4 wheel drive is all about

--C. I am always amazed at how much interesting information can be found in seemingly odd spots.

These notices were posted in the Western Spy and Hamilton Gazette by the US Post Office, all during the term of William Ruffin Postmaster. The notices were a courtesy to let people know they had mail waiting for them at the Cincinnati Post Office. I am glad they got the word out. Besides putting a name to a date, the brief descriptions of an address provide clues as to where to look for more information, particularly in the case of Noah Tryon.

September 30, 1800

Ebenezer Cooley, Near the mouth of the Big Miami

October 2, 1802

Noah Tryon, North Bend

April, 1803

Noah Tryon

June 30, 1803

Wm Cooley, M. It is a great resource for anyone with ties to Southeast Indiana.

I went there in 2006 looking for some information on my Wilson, McCullough and Snodgrass families. While I didn't find what I was looking for, I did transcribe some items from a book that I picked up out of curiosity. I didn't attempt to correct or revise spelling of the original, although I may have made some mistakes of my own (McT Paul is not right, but I couldn't turn the spelling into any other configuration).

I haven't seen these lists published elsewhere, so I am listing them here.

Ripley County Commissioner’s Minute Book 1835-1840

Grand jurors for September term 1840
Selected by the board of County Com. at their May term 1840

1. Coleman in 1931 entitled The Early Records Of The First Presbyterian Church at Goshen, New York, From 1767-1885. This past week I was able to browse through a copy of the book at the Cincinnati Public Library (call number R929.3 g67). While it didn't yield any connections for my branch of the family, I did find many Cooley marriages and baptisms. I suggest that anyone finding a name of interest refer to the book to confirm the spellings and dates.

It is interesting that the same Cooley name is also spelled Cooly, Couly, Cooley and Couley in the church records.

Marriages

3 April 1777 Andrew Willson married Unice Cooly
5 November 1777 Daniel Rumsey married Mary Cooly
24 March 1778 William Cooly married Elizabeth Hopkins
15 August 1779 William Miller married Sarah Cooly
9 November 1779 Levi Man married Anna Cooly
6 December 1779 Ashkenar Shappe married Mary Couly
3 December 1781 William Little married Meriam Cooly
15 September 1781 David Cooly married Hannah Smith
8 January 1783 Peter Randall married Mary Cooly
3 March 1783 Benjamin Lathrop married Abigail Cooly
20 September 1783 Danniel Cooly married Sybill Biells
9 October 1783 Benjamin Waldron married Melesent Maypes
11 January 1785 Freegift Couly married Experience Little
24 December 1787 Tilton Hill married Esther Cooly
16 March 1788 William Crane married Mary Couley

Baptisms

Isaac Cooley III son of Isaac Cooley and Ann Kinner born 6 November 1773, baptized 26 June 1774.

Eliud Tryon, son of ____ Tryon, born (no date), baptized 25 August 1776.

Jesse, son of Isaac Cooly and Ann Kinnear his wife, born 5 December 1775, baptized 18 May 1777.

James Kinner, son of Isaac Cooly and Ann Kinner his wife, born 27 April 1778, baptized 27 July 1778.

Baptized on 3 September 1790, Andrew, son of Preserved Couley, born 18 January 1781.

Baptized on 3 September 1790, Preserved, born 12 January 1783, son of ditto.

Hannah, daughter of ditto (Preserved), born 31 August 1785.

Anna, born 4 August 1788, daughter of ditt (Preserved).
