If you have the time, take a few minutes to look through the photographs of gravestones in the Farber Gravestone Collection. I didn't find any of my ancestor's gravestones in the collection but if you have ancestors who died in New England (a few hundred more from the Carolinas and in the maritimes in Canada and a smaller number for Texas and Virginia from various time periods) in seventeenth and eighteenth centuries you might be suprised at what you find. The collection has over 9,000 photos and many of the gravestones photographed no longer exist due to weather, vandalism and neglect.
Farber Gravestone Collection
In addition to valuable genealogical information, the collection vividly highlights the beautiful handcarving done on sandstone and other materials. Symbolism abounds, and many religious themes and symbols from fraternal orders appear on the gravestones.
"Consider me as you pass by,
As you are now so once was I,
As I am now soon ye too will be,
So prepare ye now to follow me."

Cornelius Bradshaw
This is the first record I've read that indicates that Cornelius Bradshaw lived in Indiana. All other records show him in New York and Ohio, with tax and census records showing him in Meigs County, Ohio in 1819 and 1820.
"F:157 24 April 1820, Cornelius Bradshaw, laborer, late of Meigs County, Ohio now residing in Martin County, Indiana, sold Jabez Hunter of Pennsylvania, 320 acres in Howard County."

Ohio Company Land Purchases

The Ohio Company or Ohio Company of Associates was formed in 1786 in Boston, Massachussets to speculate in land along the Ohio River. Between 1786-1796 the company purchased millions of acres of land from the US Government. They hired and dispatched surveyors to lay out lots that typically were each 100 acres in size. Many prominent names appears in these land records, including Return Jonathan Meigs, Benjamin Tupper, Rufus Putnam and many others who had important roles in Ohio's settlement and government.
The Ohio Company's purchases led to the creation of Marietta in 1788, the first permanent settlement in Ohio. It is in this area around Marietta along the Muskingum River and Duck Creek that several descendents of Ensign Benjamin Cooley purchased land. These descendents names are listed in an index of the original books of the Ohio Company:
Jabez Cooley Lot 81 100 acres Duck Creek Allotment
Asahel Cooley Lot 2 100 acres Allotment not visible or not listed
Reuben Cooley Lot 60 100 acres Muskingum Allotment
W. Simeon Cooley Lot 59 100 acres Muskingum Allotment
Thanks to a wonderful digitizing effort by the Marietta College Library, many of the original Ohio Company of Associates land records are available on the internet. Marietta College in Marietta College should be commended for making such historical documents available to everyone. The website is http://library.marietta.edu/spc/

Charles Henry Bradshaw and his cars

Charles Henry Bradshaw loved cars. In the fall of 1922, Henry, who was not quite 17 drove alone from Dallas, Texas to Los Angeles, California and kept a short notebook detailing miles travelled and where he stayed along the way. He drove the first car he owned, a 1915 Ford Model T. He would complain later that he had to repair the tires many times on that trip.Later in life Henry owned, restored and showed two Ford Model T's. The one pictured here is a 1911 Ford Model T that he purchased in 1949.
Over the course of his life, he owned twenty-nine cars and trucks, including five Ford Model T's, several Ford, Dodge and Chevrolet trucks, two Jeeps, a couple of Mercury's, and several brands that have vanished from the car scene: a 1907 Tourist 2 Cylinder (probably still being pampered in someone's garage in L.A.!), a 1926 Hudson Essex Super Six Coach, a 1928 Oakland 6 Cylinder All American and a 1933 Studebaker Rockne 10 6 Cylinder four door.
Henry became a four wheel drive fan when he bought his first Jeep in 1953. Over the years he enjoyed driving in the mountains and hills in Nevada, Arizona, California and Utah. One winter he had the opportunity to pull his son's AMC Ambassador with posi-trac traction out of the snow where it had become hopelessly stuck. He wrote a poem to capture the moment:
BOGGED DOWN
Jerry said have no fear
Because positive traction is here
We all stood there with an icy chill
When one wheel spun and the other stood still
Snow was deep we all could see
They inquired about accomodations and how much they would be
'long came Grand Pa a good fellow it has been said
What else can you say when snow is over your head?
Grand Pa was glad to pull you out
That's what 4 wheel drive is all about
